Maria Pia Bridge

Maria Pia Bridge is a work of art built between January 1876 and November 1877, Porto (Portugal) to cross the Douro. This arch bridge is the first railroad bridge to unite the two banks of the Douro. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel and his partner Theophile Seyrig in the construction company Eiffel et Cie. It was decommissioned in 1991 and replaced by the concrete bridge visible behind him.
